OMA Master Fellows and Fellows are recognized for their significant contributions that strengthen our community and move obesity treatment forward. These prestigious designations celebrate members who exemplify leadership, expertise, and a deep commitment to advancing the field.
The Highest Honor of OMA Membership
Become a Master Fellow of OMA
Master Fellows of OMA may use the designation, MFOMA, which identifies them as someone who is passionate about the field and continues to seek new ways to treat obesity effectively. The designation also allows them to stand out among their colleagues and show their pride in being a dedicated member of OMA.
Master Fellow of OMA Criteria
- Candidate must be a member of the OMA in good standing for at least ten years, five of which must be consecutive.
- Candidate must be an existing Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association (FOMA) for at least five years.
- Candidate must have made a minimum of three (3) major contributions to the OMA or the field of obesity medicine, with service to the OMA the most highly recognized. Candidates must complete an application process provided by the OMA. The application will ask the candidate to provide a list of activities and leadership commitments as a volunteer to the OMA, or to the field of obesity medicine.
- Examples include (but are not limited to the following): Serving on an OMA committee, council, workgroup, Board of Trustees, or advisory body; providing major contributions such as speaking or presenting a poster at an OMA conference, recording a webinar or podcast, or contributing to the Obesity Pillars journal.
- Candidate must provide a curriculum vitae (CV) attached to their application.
- Candidate must provide two (2) letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a current MFOMA. Of note, a minimum of one letter can be provided by an MFOMA and one letter can be provided by a FOMA.
- Candidate must have attended no less than five (5) in-person OMA meetings. These include the OMA Annual Spring Conference and/or the OMA Fall Summit.
In addition, the following may be considered for MFOMA nomination with or without the above criterion:
- Candidate has served as President of the OMA. An MFOMA designation of a Past President of the OMA can be considered by the Nominating Committee and the OMA’s Board of Trustees without completing the formal application process as described above.
Once annually, the OMA staff will collect any MFOMA applications that have been submitted and distribute these to the OMA’s Nominating Committee for consideration.

How to Apply
Becoming a Master Fellow is the highest honor bestowed upon members who demonstrate dedication and commitment to the clinical treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases. Members of the Obesity Medicine Association can apply to become a Master Fellow of OMA when they have met the required criteria. Applications are reviewed annually.

Master Fellow of OMA (MFOMA) is an honorary designation bestowed upon members whose contributions have exceeded those of a traditional member and whose leadership within the organization has elevated both the association and the field of obesity medicine.

Become a Fellow of OMA
Set yourself apart as an obesity medicine clinician dedicated to providing the highest-quality obesity care to your patients.
Fellows of OMA may use the designation, FOMA, which identifies them as someone who is passionate about the field and continues to seek new ways to treat obesity effectively. The designation also allows them to stand out among their colleagues and show their pride in being a dedicated member of OMA.
Fellow of OMA Requirements
Candidates must meet ALL the following requirements:
- Must be a current member of OMA
- Must have been a member of OMA for at least five years
- Must have earned at least 75 CME hours through OMA in the last five years
- Must be actively involved in at least one committee for at least two years OR have earned 160 points in the OMA Volunteer Program within the last five years
Candidates must meet TWO or more of the following requirements:
- Must be a current Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine
- Must have earned the Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Medicine
- Must have served as a mentor in the mentorship program
- Must receive written letters of recommendation from two board members
- Must have presented a lecture at an OMA conference
- Must have served as a chairperson on a committee
A one-time, non-refundable fee is due at the time of application. Submitting an application does not guarantee Fellow status. Applications will be reviewed, and approved applicants will be recognized and honored annually.
Maintaining the Fellow Designation
Those who have been awarded the Fellow designation may use FOMA after their name. To maintain the designation, Fellows must:
- Maintain their membership in OMA and remain in good standing
